Gulf Coast Community Organizer

Melinda Medina was born in Tyler, Texas, but grew up in Mission—a city that sits across from the Rio Grande River in Hidalgo County, approximately 20 miles north of border city Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

Her first taste of discrimination didn’t come until Melinda was 23, after her family moved out of Texas to Mississippi, nearly nine months after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, leaving cities and communities wrecked.

Serving as MIRA’s Gulf Coast community organizer, Medina organizes both immigrant and non-immigrant communities to advocate for policies and legislation that helps better the lives of immigrant families and working people of color.
